I started dieting at 10 years old. By the time I was an adult I had done it all — the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Noom, multiple juice cleanses and detoxes. I'd lose the weight, go back to eating normally, and gain it all back. For most of my life, that was the cycle.

What made it harder was that I was also managing Hashimoto's and Addison's disease — two autoimmune conditions that affect metabolism, energy, and how your body responds to stress and food. I wasn't just fighting the usual midlife hormonal shifts. My body had extra layers to navigate.

At 55, I stopped dieting and started applying what I actually know. After years in corporate America, I decided to invest in my passions — nutrition and cooking. I enrolled in the professional culinary training program at the New School of Cooking and went on to earn a Master's in Health Nutrition Education. I put both to work, designing a high-protein, metabolism-focused approach for myself and my sister. In four months I lost 13 pounds, reduced my body fat from 28% to 23%, and brought my visceral fat to zero. A year later, nothing has come back.

The shift wasn't dramatic. I structured meals around protein, ensured I got enough fiber, traded excessive cardio for strength training and walking, and started paying attention to portions. Simple adjustments — but grounded in how the midlife female metabolism actually works.
